U.S. Customs and Border Protection Data Center and Laboratory Energy Audits

Redhorse completed energy audits at CBP data centers and laboratories in Springfield, Virginia, and Houston, Texas.  The audits were conducted in accordance with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and energy audit guidance provided by DOE for Energy Independence and Security Act Section 432 auditing requirements.  Using the information obtained from the site visits, Redhorse analyzed both energy and water efficiency opportunities that could be implemented as part of normal operations and maintenance or capital retrofit projects.  Opportunities identified included:

  • Optimum start air handling units
  • Holiday schedules
  • Air handling unit temperature reset
  • Variable air volume (VAV) air handling unit static pressure reset
  • Chilled water reset
  • Combined heat and power (CHP) and boiler heating water reset
  • CHP financial sensitivity
  • Low-flow water fixtures
  • Solar power generation
  • Solar domestic water heating
  • Dedicated chiller for X-ray unit
  • Air louvers installed in equipment yard fencing to improve chiller efficiency
  • Rainwater catch basin for irrigation
  • No-touch automatic water faucets and toilet fixtures.
