High Desert Generation, Boiler System Fuel-to-Steam Efficiency

Redhorse evaluated the fuel-to-steam efficiency of a natural gas-fired cogeneration system at the World Color Press in Fernley, Nevada.  The boiler system consisted of three natural gas-fired scotch marine type boilers manufactured by Cleaver-Brooks.  The boiler system supplies steam to the facility for use in two areas: building steam, and solvent recovery steam.  The heat absorbed by the steam and the input to the boiler systems were calculated for a 1-month period using the saturated steam pressure, flow rate, temperature, natural gas use, and other system operating data.  Based on the input and output of the system, the boiler efficiency was calculated at 73.2 percent.
