Federal Aviation Administration Control Tower Design Review

Redhorse conducted design reviews of the new air traffic control towers and support buildings that will be built in Las Vegas, Nevada, Oakland, California, and Palm Springs, California  Redhorse evaluated construction documents and operating specifications at the 70 percent and 100 percent levels.  The focus of the design review was to identify measures that could be incorporated into the final design and operating specifications that would result in additional energy savings for the FAA that would not have otherwise occurred.  Recommendations provided to FAA included both low-cost and no-cost projects that typically related to operational requirements as well as capital projects that would result in an actual change in the design.  For select recommendations, Redhorse provided estimated energy savings (electric and gas), cost savings, implementation cost, and simple payback.  More than 810,000 kWh of energy savings were identified with associated cost savings of more than $95,000 per year and an implementation cost of approximately $228,000.  The overall simple payback for the recommendations was less than 2.4 years.
