Electric Utility Communications Infrastructure Assessment

Redhorse conducted an infrastructure assessment at 104 radio sites as part of development and deployment of an extensive radio freqruency (RF)-based communications network for SmartGrid applications. The network included an area in Southern California from Visalia on the north, to the Mexican border on the south, and to Arizona on the east.  Redhorse conducted surveys at each of the radio sites to identify infrastructure improvements needed to accommodate the new communications equipment. We used the information to evaluate the feasibility of a particular site and the scope and associated costs to make it ready. Redhorse engineers conducted the site inspections and collected information on the following:

    •    Site coordinates
    •    Existing facility condition
    •    Floor space and available laydown area for new equipment
    •    Power supply source, breaker panel rating, and wiring
    •    Backup power, including power conditioning  and level of redundancy
    •    Interior cable and tower ladder for coaxial cable runs
    •    Grounding of electrical systems
    •    HVAC capability and redundancy

Redhorse used this information to help assess the ability of the current network to support the net new capacity requirements associated with this project. It documented the current capacity by site, the net new capacity required by site, and the surplus or deficit of network capacity by site and also included an estimated scope, budget, and schedule to increase capacity to required levels.
